This commission was undertaken as part of a major regeneration programme in Pontypool. The Italian Gardens in which it is situated are part of Pontypool Park, a Listed historic park. The gardens were created by Capel Hanbury Leigh around 1849-50, inspired by the Isola Bella Gardens in Lake Maggiore.

CADW required our fountain to reflect the Italianate origins of the Gardens, which led to the design of three fantastical water creatures frolicking in the water around a rocky crag. The figures are carved in Portland limestone. Into the pool capstones I carved an excerpt from a local poem which reads, A place where those who pass might dwell and meditate….
