Decorative Lettering

A well chosen verse or quotation, hand carved onto a rugged slab of sandstone or a smooth, honed piece of Welsh or Cumbrian slate makes a beautiful and unusual feature in a garden path; it can be discovered unexpected in a hidden nook in a wall, or taking centre-stage on a mantlepiece or hanging in an interior alcove. I can design and hand carve your chosen decorative inscription, or I can work from your initial idea to create carving that is both decorative and thought-provoking. 

Inscriptions can be carved into standing stones, boulders, or into existing paving or walls, provided that they are reasonably flat and suitable for hand carving. Alternatively, you might prefer to choose a new piece of slate or stone to be inscribed with a poem or verse, a name, or the details of a special event in your life. I can add pictorial relief carvings to illustrate the verse or quotation, or I can carve a border or other decoration amongst or around the lettering. Be as playful or as traditional as you like with your ideas! Lettering is an artform and the lines and curves of our alphabet can be moulded to create beautiful patterns, as well as to inform.

If a hand carved inscription is to be hung on a wall - interior or exterior - I can provide the artwork with holes drilled in the back and steel dowels for mounting, along with instructions on how to install your carving.
